Yoga is more than a body science, it is the science that works on our physical and emotional health too. Being in the state of yoga is a magical experience, an experience that opens the route to inner light and the route to discovery of the self. There are several things that yoga teaches us, some of those directly show up in our bodies while the other lessons gradually show positive effects on our mental health. While everyone’s experiences with Yoga are different, here are some of the core life lessons that yoga teaches us all.
Fear Does Not Exist Anymore
Fear engulfs a major part of our lives at times, whether its the fear of embarrassment on account of not being able to do something, or its the fear of simple failure that impedes us to try out new stuff or accept challenges. Yoga makes us feel more confident and pretty much fearless in the body and mind. Mastering advanced yoga asanas are challenges within itself that many of us are afraid to even try. We fail, we fall, we fail again, we fall again, but eventually we perfect it, we move into the pose with grace that it is stunning to see what our bodies are capable of doing. Yoga teaches us patience and the confidence to take up any challenge without fear whether it is practicing a new technique or facing a real life challenge.
Being Vulnerable is Beautiful
For most of us who have been through emotional traumas and painful experiences, it is easier to shut down and build a wall around ourselves than open our hearts and let ourselves go. Yoga teaches us the opposite. Through heart-opening asanas such as the Wheel Pose (Urdhva Dhanurasana), the science pushes us to be open and vulnerable, it shows us that it is alright to show your emotions and be open to emotionally stimulating experiences. It teaches us to let go of the ego and really listen to all those around us. Open your heart and let things go. You might get hurt, you might even fall, but being grounded is something you learn when you are at the bottom. From there, there is nowhere to go but upwards.
Live in the Present
Live a life with no regrets, live in today coz we have not seen what tomorrow will bring. So, why waste our energy and life in worrying about something that has not happened yet or something that stops you from being truly present in the moment, something that holds you back from being mindful? While this seems like jargon, Yoga transforms this into reality. When taking a yoga class, it is difficult to get into it, the focus that it needs, to reach a state where there is just you, your breath, and the amazing voice of yoga, it can overwhelm you at first. But when you really get into it, the outcomes are amazing. Mindfulness is one of the greatest gifts to experience and imbibe.
Breath is Everything!
Hard to believe that something which we do every moment of our existence can actually help navigate through the most anxious situations. Yoga teaches us the power of utilizing our breath to overcome any emotional hassle, to be in the situation and yet remain unaffected by it. It teaches us how to use the breath to gain limitless focus, clear our energy channels to facilitate the flow of positive energy in our body. It teaches us to conquer even the toughest reactions just by simply breathing in and out. Now that’s the beauty of yoga that only true yogis can experience. Hopefully, we are one of those who truly can.
Self-Love is the Strongest Suit!
People often believe that self-love and being selfish are synonymous with each other. Well, these two terms are as different as two characters of two different stories. To be truly happy in life and to really be able to take care of others, it is important to be happy within yourself. Being in love with the self and looking after yourself is the most essential part of living a healthy life. Self-love is tough for some, and easy for some. Yoga teaches us on how to go about the journey of self-love towards utilizing it for emotional and physical wellbeing.
Stress less, Live More
Live a life without stress or burdens, we have heard of this a number of times from different sources. But it is insanely difficult to follow it, not unless there is a clear path or how to reach a place where you can learn to let go, where you can control your reactions, where you can guide yourself to be truly at peace and be okay during overbearing situations. Yoga teaches you that. It teaches you to gain physical and emotional control over yourself just by breathing in and out or just by falling into a pose. It is difficult journey for most of us, but when we get there, we reach a point where these situations appear materialistic and so superficial that you feel unaffected by them. Now, that would be amazing place to be at. Wouldn’t it be?
Don’t Give Up!
Many of us cruise through life without tapping our true potential. We do not even know what kind of power our body and mind hold, what kind of thing we are capable of achieving if we truly explore our body and mind. Yoga helps us tap into the layers of our physical and emotional being, so we emerge as strong, confident and powerful individuals who are capable of extraordinary things. It teaches us the patience to never give up on our body and falling into the asanas, keep meditating till we find our inner light, till we perform the asanas perfectly. Agreed, this does not happen overnight, but that’s Yoga. It pushes you and helps you develop the patience to count on yourself rather than the minutes of your life. It helps you start believing in yourself, it makes you feel invincible.
